Keep these tips in mind for a successful ski trip in Italy!
Skiing Conditions
The best time to go to Italy on holiday is between November and April, when the snow forms a beautiful blanket over the Alps and Dolomites. The season opens in October.
Most of the slopes are red, including the challenging Stelvio piste that hosts World Cup races. They’re all entertaining enough for mid-level intermediates, but our absolute must-ski is the summit-to-base route with the biggest vertical drop in Italy – over a mile.
Food and Drink
Pizza, pasta and gelato are firm favourites worldwide – but there’s so much more to Italian food. From age-old comfort food to sweet treats, here are some other top local specialities to try on your next ski holiday:
Fonduta Valdostana
The Aosta Valley neighbours France and Switzerland are both famous for their cheese, so it’s no surprise that fondue is a big deal here, too. Italians put their own spin on it by using local Fontina cheese and adding egg yolks to make it extra rich.
Canederli
A kind of dumpling found in the Dolomite mountains, this is comfort food at its best. Canederli were first made by farmers who used leftover ham and cheese by adding breadcrumbs, rolling the mix into balls and cooking them in beef, chicken or vegetable broth.
Crostoli
These traditional treats are made with sweet dough that’s rolled super thin and cut into strips, then fried and dusted with icing sugar. They were created for Carnevale, the period before Lent when Italians indulged in rich foods and wore costumes.
Panissa
The Piedmont region is well known for its vineyards and rice fields, and you can make the most of both by tucking into a bowl of panissa. This stick-to-your-ribs dish is made with arborio or carnaroli risotto rice mixed with borlotti beans, pancetta, salami and pork fat and cooked in top-quality local red wine like Barolo or Barbera
Strudel di mele
Apple strudel is an Austrian creation, but since the Italian regions of South Tyrol and Trentino once belonged to Austria, it’s still a popular dessert here, too. The strudels are filled with apples, raisins, nuts and cinnamon. Get yours topped with vanilla sauce, ice cream or custard as a sweet ending to a meal, or pair it with a mid-morning coffee stop.

Apres-ski Activities
Apres ski activities are an essential part of any ski holiday. Whether you fancy swimming, a spa session, shopping, ice skating, sledging or a night clubbing, you’re sure to find something to help make your stay memorable.
You’d need several hands to count the tipples masterminded in the land of La Dolce Vita, such as Bombardino, Aperol, Grappa, Limoncello and Prosecco. Each is perfect for the end of a day of feel-good skiing.
