In this day and age, we’re all food critics. It used to be an exclusive profession, writing and reviewing restaurants, but with social media and foodie blogs, we’ve all become experts. Plus, we all need to zone out at times. Instead of scrolling, I like to play an online game when I want to clear my mind.
Everyone’s a Food Expert
To be an expert, you need to have a high degree of skill or knowledge in a particular subject. However, just because everyone eats, it doesn’t make you an expert. A food expert knows how food is grown, processed and distributed, and they understand how food is prepared and stored.
I call myself a foodie because I’ve worked front and back of house in bars, cafes and restaurants and have run events and weddings. I also love to cook. Am I the crème de la crème? Of course not! But I’m open-minded and willing to learn – which even top-level people should continue to do.
Could You Run a Coffee Shop?
Suppose you’ve always dreamed of running your own coffee shop. In that case, the online game allows you to open Café Calypso and make as much money as possible in 14 days. You start each day by prepping, buying ingredients, adjusting your recipe, and setting your price.
The game shows you what your customers have bought, if they are happy, and how much money you have made. You make adjustments to your recipe and cost to make your profit. You have no control over some external factors, such as the number of customers walking past and the temperature. You also don’t want to buy too much stock, which will go stale. I had the knack of it by day 7 and started making “serious” money.
What about a Chocolate Shop?
One of my favourite games is Chocolate Shop. Like an authentic café, you have to try to serve everyone in the order they came in and promptly deliver the right food. Firstly, you bring a menu to each customer; once they have decided what they want to order, you walk to the appropriate machine and select the type of food they want. You can carry two things at once, just like in real life.
To keep your servers speed up, you’ll need to refuel with a coffee periodically. As you go up the levels, it gets more complex, guests get more demanding, and you also need to take telephone orders. Just like working in a real restaurant, it’s frustrating when customers think you’re too slow.
Open a Restaurant
Other games include being a pizza baker, running a hotdog cart, an ice cream bar or opening a restaurant. In this game, you open a restaurant where you’re the head waiter, or Maître D, as it’s known in the industry. Like in a real-life restaurant, you take the guests to their table, take the order and serve their food. While juggling these tasks, you must make enough money to carry over to the next day to keep your cash flow going.
Do you Have What It Takes?
These games are ideal for those who want to run a successful restaurant. You may have a passion and vision, but this will give you a taste of the skills you’ll need to juggle your business daily. It’s also a perfect tool for students. This is a great way to show how budgeting works. Or for those who didn’t really understand finance, like me. I had no idea how much money I needed weekly to pay my essential bills, saving for staycations, bottomless brunches, afternoon teas and fun with friends.
