Start in the UK
Deciding to go travelling to another country, potentially one where you don’t speak the language, can be the travel equivalent of jumping in the deep end. Not everyone can take this step the first time! It might be better to find somewhere in the UK that you can go to on your own if you want a little break to test yourself.
Book a nice hotel and really treat yourself on this first trip. It is the perfect excuse for you to go somewhere you have never been before. Why not look at some of the hotels in Cheltenham, such as Ellenborough Park? Surrounding yourself with luxury could be the ideal way for you to treat yourself and get you used to travelling on your own.
Nail the Art of Dining Alone
One of the hardest parts of travelling by yourself can be going to a restaurant to eat alone. Many can feel self-conscious when they are by themselves, and might not want to take up a table on their own. Of course, this is all nonsense! You have as much right to eat in a restaurant as any other diner!
Since you have no partner to make conversation with, you need to think up something else to do while you wait for your food. One of the most popular options is to read, but in this modern day you might also decide to browse your phone. As soon as you can nail dining alone, you will realise that the world is your oyster!
Leave an Itinerary Behind
When travelling on your own, it can be a good idea to take some basic steps to protect yourself. Prepare a small dossier with information about where you are going and the hotel you are staying at. Make sure to include things like contact information. Give this to someone that you trust, like a family member. If they need to get in touch with you but you can’t answer your phone for some reason, they should be able to at least get a message to your hotel.
Likewise, try to have some contact information for them on your person, such as saving their number on your phone under ICE. It never hurts to be too cautious.
Learn the Language
Learning the language of the place you’re visiting is key to feeling confident and connected. You can enrol in language classes, hire an online language tutor, or use language apps. Understanding even basic phrases can make a big difference in navigating and appreciating a new culture. Plus, locals often appreciate the effort to speak their language, making interactions more pleasant and rewarding. Learning a language adds a new dimension to your travels, making them more enriching and memorable.
Learning how to travel on your own will open up a massive world of travel and exploration. The sooner that you can do this with confidence, the better! Before you know it, you will have no trouble travelling the world on your own!
